SMP is an abbreviation for Scalp Micropigmentation. This technique is very similar to tattooing and is often referred to as scalp tattooing. It uses a thin needle (the diameter of a hair follicle) and under the hand of a skilled and trained technician small dots are carefully and appropriately placed to mimic the look of hair.
Who are the best candidates for SMP?
Anyone and everyone who feels they could use our help are eligible. Our most common clients are those who are completely bald (even alopecia clients), those with unsuccessful hair transplant surgeries, those with thinning hair, and to cover any scars left after surgeries.
How long does it last?
When done well the final results will last over 10 years.
How many sessions will I need?
You will need a minimum of 2 sessions and may take up to 4 sessions with 3 to 4 weeks between each session. This allows for the complete healing of the area before retouching any areas that have faded. After all these sessions are complete you may need a touch up every few years only to small areas that might have faded.
Will the color change to blue/green over time?
Because we use the highest quality of inks and careful techniques we don't face this problem
Will it fade quickly?
After your first session you should expect up to 90% of the color will be gone. Do not worry, this is normal and expected and this is why the second and sometimes third sessions are needed to build on this original foundation. Once all your sessions are complete, the fading will be very minimal and will require small touch ups every few years.
Is it painful?
The better answer is there is a bit of discomfort. Clients often complain of mild discomfort rather than pain and that it is tolerable.
Is there bleeding?
When done well there is no bleeding unless an underlying condition is prone to it.
How long is each session?
The time needed depends on the area to be covered. Small areas can usually be complete in a few hours. Full heads may take up to 10 hours over 2 consecutive days.
Is it safe? Are there any contraindications?
It is extremely safe. All inks used are of natural substances and rarely cause any allergic reactions (those who are susceptible to allergic reactions can have an allergy prick test before proceeding). The only condition that may be a problem is to those suffering from any back or neck problems due to the long hours needed to complete the procedure.
What do I need to do prior to my appointment?
These are the recommendations before your session:
Be sure the scalp has not been sunburned.
For dry/flaky scalps be sure to exfoliate 1 week before the appointment and moisturize every day up to one day before.
Stay out of the sun for 7 days before your appointment.
Shave your head and wash your scalp one day before your appointment.
Do not place any products on your scalp on the day of the appointment.
Rest well and eat well the day of your appointment.
What are my after care instructions?
These are the recommendations after you complete your session:
Do not touch or scratch the area we worked on
Do not take a shower for 3 - 5 days after your session (washing your body is no problem, just no washing the scalp)
Avoid excessive sweating from exercising for 3 - 5 days.
Avoid direct sun exposure or be sure to apply SPF on the area when being exposed to the sun for many hours.
Wear a new/clean hat after your session.
How much does it cost?
Prices depend on the size of the area that needs to be covered. You can visit our price page for all the details. Remember it is a lot cheaper to get it done well the first time than trying to fix it when it goes wrong.
Why is it so expensive?
The amount of time and the type of skill it takes to get our results is well worth it. These results will last you over 10 years, make sure you get the best.
